David Moyes has sparked a revival at Everton in his first job since leaving West Ham in somewhat controversial circumstances.
Everton have won two of their first three games under David Moyes after he and West Ham parted ways at the end of last season.
The Scot is indisputably West Ham’s most successful manager in generations.
It says everything about the job Moyes did in east London that Everton would be over the moon to come anywhere close to matching their achievements of his tenure.
The Scot saved the Irons from relegation in his first stint with the Hammers.
Moyes did the same again when he returned for a second spell during the difficult circumstances surrounding the pandemic.
West Ham then enjoyed the kind of meteoric rise that Everton fans are dreaming of under Moyes.
The Hammers finished sixth – agonisingly just a solitarily win off a top four place on the final day.
Moyes also led West Ham to the club’s record Premier League points total that season.
West Ham reached a Europa League semi-final and quarter-final either side of winning their first trophy for 43 years when they lifted the Europa Conference League.
That meant a third consecutive season of European football for the first time in the club’s 130-year history.
West Ham’s new Moyes snub lacks class
Moyes had West Ham in the top six at the turn of the year last season.
But the wheels feel off when word got out that he was not happy with the terms of his new contract offer.
Moyes was not happy to cede control of transfers to technical director Tim Steidten. His son David junior was also to be demoted from the scouting department.
Steidten and Moyes had a falling out, something the German has since repeated with his replacement Julen Lopetegui.
In the end Moyes departed and is now leading a revival at Everton while Steidten is following Lopetegui out of the West Ham exit door.
Some West Ham fans miss Moyes while others were pleased his tenure was brought to an end.
Whatever your stance on the former Hammers boss, most true West Ham fans will always respect and appreciate the job he did.
So West Ham’s new Moyes snub lacks class but he may get revenge with Everton next week.
Everton’s new manager was awarded an OBE in the King’s New Year’s Honours.
Moyes showed real class by crediting West Ham for the honour, believing the work he did in east London and winning the trophy was key to the award.
West Ham failed to acknowledge Moyes’ OBE on its website or social media channels.
That did not go down well with many Hammers fans.
When Everton faced Brighton on Saturday, Moyes took charge of his 700th Premier League game.
Ex Hammers boss Moyes may get revenge with Everton next week
He became only the third manager to reach the landmark after Frenchman Arsene Wenger at Arsenal (828 games) and compatriot Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford (810).
The football world was reacting to the achievement this weekend.
But West Ham failed to acknowledge the major milestone set by their most successful manager of a generation.
The Hammers, despite not being in action until Sunday, did not post anything about the achievement on their website or social media channels.
That’s despite a large chunk of those Premier League games being from his two spells with West Ham.
As a result, many Hammers fans have been critical of the club, feeling it shows a lack of basic decency and respect.
Given the messy way his West Ham tenure ended with the Steidten fall-out, Moyes would be within his rights to hold a grudge towards his former club.
But he has had nothing but praise for West Ham since leaving.
Moyes also made it clear he has taken no pleasure in seeing the Irons struggle since his departure.
Well he may now get a small measure of revenge on the club in the next week.
After leading Everton to wins over Spurs and Brighton, the Toffees are now just three points behind West Ham in the Premier League table.
The Hammers have tough fixtures away at Aston Villa and then Chelsea in the next week.
Meanwhile Everton take on relegation candidates Leicester at Goodison Park.
Given Everton’s far superior goal difference, there is every chance Moyes will be sitting above West Ham in the table by the time they kick off at Chelsea.
That will be embarrassing for West Ham given the club spent £155m on nine new players following Moyes’ exit and Everton were looking on course for relegation.
