Sources: Everton could agree ‘mini-Messi’ signing with ‘£10m+ bid’

Everton are looking to sign Marcus Edwards in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Merseyside giants are “very keen” to bring in a winger this month.

Edwards is someone who fits the profile of what Everton are looking for, being a right-sided left-footed winger, but it remains to be seen if they can agree a fee with Sporting Lisbon.

The former Tottenham youngster was previously described as a “mini-Messi” by Mauricio Pochettino, and well-placed sources have told Football Insider he would cost around £10million

Edwards hasn’t only featured 10 times in all competitions this season for Sporting Lisbon, with game time being limited for him in Portugal.

A move to the Premier League could help the 26-year-old gain some more regular playing time as Moyes attempts to inject more width into the team.

Everton want to strengthen their attacking options

Edwards has scored 60 goals and provided 55 assists across 286 career appearances in all competitions and could provide Everton with more attacking options.

However, it is believed the club would prefer a loan deal for the winger while Sporting Lisbon would rather sell Edwards on a permanent basis.

The Merseyside giants are openly pursuing a winger during the January transfer window, with this being an area of the team Moyes has identified to strengthen.

The new Everton boss has a number of wingers on his list of potential targets, but any financial deals could be difficult for the club to pull off.

Issues surrounding profit and sustainability rules are going to restrict Everton’s January business, which is why they would rather sign Edwards on a loan deal.
