Paul Finebaum Reveals National Championship Contender That ‘Has Some Problems’

The 2024 college football season is entering Week 6, and several teams have unanswered questions. According to ESPN’s Paul Finebaum, one team in question is the Georgia Bulldogs. During the “Paul Finebaum Show,” the SEC Network analyst expressed his belief that the preseason national championship favorite is facing some challenges. Finebaum mentioned that Georgia has been struggling to start games well, and its defense has also faced difficulties.

“Georgia has some problems,” Finebaum said. “I don’t know how to explain (it). They have the exact same problem they had last year. They can’t start games. Their defense has spots. So, ultimately, Kirby Smart has plenty to correct.”

The Bulldogs are coming off their first regular-season loss since 2020. On Saturday, Georgia was defeated 41-34 by the Alabama Crimson Tide. Georgia had a slow start, falling behind 28-0 before staging an impressive comeback and briefly taking a 34-33 lead late in the fourth quarter. However, Alabama’s Jalen Milroe connected with Ryan Williams for a 75-yard touchdown pass on the next play, regaining the lead and securing the victory. In 2023, Georgia experienced a similar situation when they suffered their only loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game. At halftime, Georgia was behind 17-7 after another slow start. Although they attempted a comeback and narrowed the score to 20-17 early in the fourth quarter, they ultimately lost 27-24, ending their chance at a three-peat.

Georgia must address slow starts and defensive issues that Finebaum mentioned in order to compete for a national championship.
