However, Hodgson is back in east Hull for Christmas and it seems he put those coaching skills to good use on Thursday night at Craven Park after being invited to do some work with the club’s academy.
In a post on the club’s official X page, Hodgson can be seen wearing Rovers coaching gear while talking to some of the club’s promising young players under the lights. KR’s head of academy Jason Netherton also posted some pictures of Hodgson in action, adding: “The King of Bilton back where he belongs.
Hodgson spent five years as a player with the Robins, making his name with his local side after emerging through the youth ranks at cross-city rivals Hull FC. He made 134 appearances and scored 36 tries for the club.
His form in the red and white of Rovers not only saw him push his way into the England squad, but it also saw him seal a move to the NRL with Canberra Raiders. In eight seasons with the Green Machine, he played 138 times and represented the club in one Grand Final.
He finished his career with Parramatta with a neck injury bringing his playing days to an end at the age of 33.
Hodgson has now taken charge of the Eels’ Harold Matthews Cup team for 2025 and speaking to James Graham on the Bye Round podcast last month, he outlined his excitement regarding the next chapter of his career.
“I’m really looking forward to working at Parramatta,” he said. “I think there’s a real progression line there for me. I’ve really enjoyed working at the club and I really enjoyed really immersing myself.
“I’m trying to repay the club and the faith they showed in me which I couldn’t kind of repay when I was playing, so I’m trying to repay that now in my post career and trying to get the best out of some of these kids.
On his future he added: “With coaching, you’ve got to take the opportunities where they come, no matter where they are. So we’re ready for that and I’m ready for that individually.”
