NASCAR fans spot curious detail in new F1 team announcement

An announcement over a future Cadillac F1 team has revealed that TWG Global ‘owns and operates’ Spire Motorsports, something many NASCAR fans were not aware of.

NASCAR fans unearthed information about the ownership of Spire Motorsports on Monday, as it was announced that an agreement in principle has been reached over Cadillac having a Formula One team from 2026.

A press release confirmed that General Motors and TWG Global will bring Cadillac to F1, and listed the other motorsports teams they operate, including Spire.

At the end of the press release concerning a new F1 team, it confirmed that “TWG Global owns and operates Andretti Global, Wayne Taylor Racing, and Spire Motorsports.”

One investor at TWG Global is Mark Walter, who Forbes claim has a net worth of $6 billion. Walter is the part-owner and chairman of the Major League Baseball franchise Los Angeles Dodgers, co-owns Premier League club Chelsea, and also owns the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL).

Dan Towriss also works under groups who have invested in Spire, but fans are only now realizing that the NASCAR team is perhaps run differently than previously thought. “It’s been known that Towriss made some sort of investment in Spire, but this is the first time that anyone has publicly stated that TWG actually “owns” the team,” one NASCAR fan wrote on Reddit.

“Makes sense where all that money came from now,” another added. Fans are already expecting Spire to be more of a threat over the next few seasons, after realizing how wealthy some of the team owners are.

While Spire will continue to be a major focus, the prospect of starting a new F1 team is huge for motorsports. Cadillac would be the first new team to join F1 since 2016 and the eleventh team on the grid

Spire Motorsports is co-owned by long-time NASCAR industry executives Jeff Dickerson and Thaddeus ‘T.J.’ Puchyr, but it has become public knowledge TWG Global are also on board.

“As the pinnacle of motorsports, F1 demands boundary-pushing innovation and excellence. It’s an honor for General Motors and Cadillac to join the world’s premier racing series, and we’re committed to competing with passion and integrity to elevate the sport for race fans around the world,” said GM President Mark Reuss. This is a global stage for us to demonstrate GM’s engineering expertise and technology leadership at an entirely new level.”

“We’re excited to partner with General Motors in bringing a dynamic presence to Formula 1,” said Dan Towriss, CEO of TWG Global’s motorsports businesses. “Together, we’re assembling a world-class team that will embody American innovation and deliver unforgettable moments to race fans around the world.
