Even though Jordan Love has already started practicing with the Green Bay Packers again after missing Week 2 with a knee injury, the expectation that Malik Willis will start this Sunday against the Tennessee Titans on the road remains. And with that, the Packers have also promoted quarterback Sean Clifford from the practice squad, according to Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.
Green Bay Packers make an insurance move at the QB position before Week 3’s game vs. Tennessee Titan
This is also the same move that the Packers made on Clifford just before Week 2’s home game against the Indianapolis Colts, as he served as Willis’ backup. With another Clifford call-up from the practice squad, the Packers can only make the same move one more time without being required to sign him to the regular roster.
Clifford was among the roster cut casualties of the Packers ahead of the 2024 NFL regular season but Green Bay still kept him by signing the former Penn State Nittany Lions quarterback to the practice squad. He was taken in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL draft by the Packers and appeared in two games during his rookie season.
Clifford is more of an insurance behind Willis if the Packers end up ruling out Love. The Titans are winless and look very beatable for Green Bay, with or without Love active. It seems that Green Bay could just make the wise final decision of holding Love back for at least one more game.
Love suffered a sprained MCL injury late in the fourth quarter of Week 1’s defeat at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil.
In Week 2, Willis went 12-of-14 for 122 passing yards and a touchdown , while Josh Jacobs had 151 rushing yards on 32 carries.
