‘Gossip Girl’ Actress Michelle Trachtenberg Cause of Death Revealed

Michelle Trachtenberg, the actress best known for her roles in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Gossip Girl,” died at the age of 39 due to complications from diabetes mellitus.

The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner released this official cause of death on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, following a review of laboratory test results. The manner of death was determined to be natural.

Trachtenberg was found unresponsive in her Manhattan apartment on February 26, 2025. At the time, her death was unexpected, and her family had initially objected to an autopsy for religious reasons. As there was no suspicion of foul play, the cause of death was initially listed as “undetermined.”

However, the Medical Examiner’s Office proceeded with toxicology testing, which can be conducted without a full autopsy. These tests ultimately revealed that complications from diabetes were the cause of her death.

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition where the body has trouble regulating blood sugar levels. If left unmanaged, it can lead to various serious health complications.

Following the announcement of her death in February, many of Trachtenberg’s former co-stars and colleagues shared heartfelt tributes. News of her passing at such a young age was met with sadness by fans and the entertainment industry.

This official determination brings clarity to the cause of Michelle Trachtenberg’s untimely death, confirming it was due to natural causes arising from complications of diabetes.
