A former Georgia football assistant has become the newest head coach in the NFL.
It’s not too often that a former Georgia football assistant coach becomes a head coach in the NFL. Reason being that most coaches on a staff in college tend to want to work their way up in the college ranks instead of jumping to the NFL. But this former Bulldog assistant has actually been a longtime NFL assistant, so the fact that he came to Georgia and the college ranks in the first place is a little surprising.
But regardless of all of that, former Georgia Offensive Coordinator Brian Schottenheimer was announced as the new head coach of the Dallas Cowboys on Friday,
Brian Schottenheimer is taking over in Dallas
Schottenheimer’s time in Georgia was very short as he was only on staff for one season. He was the Offensive Coordinator for the Bulldogs during the 2015 season which was the last season before Kirby Smart took over as head coach.
The Bulldogs offense was not very strong during this season as they averaged 26.3 points which was a significant decrease from the season before he arrived in Athens. Georgia also lost their two biggest games of the season to Florida and Alabama that season, thanks in large part to the awful performances from the offense in both games. These facts likely are the reason that Smart did not retain Schottenheimer on staff when he was hired.
After the 2015 season, Schottenheimer made his way back to the NFL, which is where he had spent the 15 years prior to being hired by Georgia. Schottenheimer has always been an assistant coach in the NFL, but he was hired by the Cowboys before the 2022 season where he must have begun impressing those around him. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones also must have loved what he saw from Schottenheimer, because he ultimately made the shocking decision to promote him on Friday.
It will be interesting to see if this hire works out for the Cowboys or not. Many NFL and Cowbows fans do not like this move, and it’s hard to argue against them because Schottenheimer does not have any experience as a head coach. And with the magnifying glass that is always put on the Cowboys, Schottenheimer is going to have to turn the Cowboys around immediately if he is going to want to keep his job.
However, even if he was only on the Bulldogs’ staff for one season, it would be nice to see him succeed with the Cowboys. Georgia fans have no reason to cheer against him, so if the Cowboys aren’t playing your favorite NFL team then it might nut hurt to support Dallas a little bit next season.
