Former Auburn quarterback Hank Brown is reportedly on the move to the Big Ten via the transfer portal after 2 seasons with the Tigers.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the former 3-star recruit out of Tennessee committed to the Hawkeyes after visiting Iowa City this week. Thamel quoted Brown as saying the appeal of the Hawkeyes was the consistent culture under Kirk Ferentz and the variety that Iowa has found in the system provided by offensive coordinator Tim Lester.
Listed at 6-foot-4 and 195 pounds, Brown redshirted his first season at Auburn while appearing in 1 game during the 2023 season. He appeared in 4 games for the Tigers this year, throwing for 403 yards with 6 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.
Brown’s best came game against New Mexico when he threw for 235 yards and 4 touchdowns. However, he was picked off 3 times in his next game against Arkansas while going 7-for-13 for 72 yards without a touchdown.
The fit at Iowa makes a good bit of sense with Lester arriving in 2024 to help unlock a stagnant offense left behind by Brian Ferentz. While the Hawkeyes did not set many scoring records, they were much better than in recent history and produced one of the best running backs in the country in Kaleb Johnson while rotating a trio of QBs.
Brown could also find a path to quick playing time at Iowa. The Hawkeyes have lost 3 QBs to the portal this offseason, including Cade McNamara. While McNamara was injured throughout his 2-year tenure, he was the team’s starter for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
We’ll see what the future holds for Brown.
