The Tennessee Titans are shaking things up on their offensive line, and former Alabama tackle Alex Leatherwood is at the center of the change.
After playing every snap as a rookie at tackle, Leatherwood is switching to guard, according to a report from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
The move is likely a response to Leatherwood’s struggles at tackle last season. Despite playing every snap, he allowed 10 sacks and committed 10 penalties, according to Pro Football Focus.
By moving to guard, Leatherwood will have less responsibility in pass protection and can focus on using his strength to open up holes in the running game.
The Titans drafted Leatherwood in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, hoping he would solidify their tackle position. However, after a rocky rookie season, the team is clearly looking for a new solution.
Leatherwood’s position switch is just one of several changes the Titans are making to their offense this offseason. The team has also signed free agent guard Andre Dillard and drafted tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere in the third round.
With Leatherwood’s move to guard, the Titans’ starting lineup on the offensive line is starting to take shape. The team is expected to start Leatherwood at left guard, Dillard at right guard, and Petit-Frere at right tackle.
The Titans are hoping that these changes will help improve their offense, which struggled to move the ball consistently last season. With a new-look offensive line, the team is looking to make a deep playoff run in 2023.
