Marques, 48, was Alonso’s partner when the Spaniard was at the start of his F1 journey. He was there to watch the now Aston Martin driver transform from a talented, but raw youngster, into the world-class driver who would eventually win two world championships with Renault.
While the FIA World Drivers’ Championship title has evaded him since his last title victory in 2006, Alonso is still competing strongly today. He is one of few drivers to close the gap on Schumacher and pip the German to the championship.
The legendary Ferrari driver is still considered to be the greatest of all time, having won seven world titles throughout his storied career. Yet, Marques is one of the few who do not share this opinion and believes his former team-mate was better than the likes of Schumacher and Ayrton Senna.
Speaking with Aston Martin, the Brazilian said: “I am an Ayrton Senna fan like all Brazilians, and there are recent legends like Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, and now Max Verstappen, and it’s very difficult to compare drivers across eras, but I think Fernando is as good as them or better.
“If I had to pick one driver for my team, I would choose Fernando. I think he was better than Schumacher when they raced against each other and, Brazilians will get upset, I would say he’s better than Senna too.
“Senna was amazing, a natural talent, but the truth is that he used to make more mistakes than Fernando. Fernando learned quickly how to drive a race not just fast but intelligently something I would say of Hamilton too.
