F1 2025 Standings: Sainz overtakes Red Bull star as NEW championship leader crowned

Piastri Leads as Sainz Climbs

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia – Following an action-packed Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, the Formula 1 World Championship standings have seen a significant shake-up, with Oscar Piastri emerging as the new leader. Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz’s strong performance has propelled him up the order, overtaking a Red Bull driver in the process.

The fifth race of the 2025 season, held at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, witnessed a second consecutive victory for McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. This win, coupled with his earlier triumph in China and Bahrain, has propelled the young Australian to the top of the drivers’ championship standings with 99 points.

Piastri’s teammate, Lando Norris, who started the season as the championship leader after winning the Australian Grand Prix, finished fourth in Saudi Arabia. This result sees him slip to second in the standings with 89 points, a mere 10 points behind his McLaren partner.

Max Verstappen, despite securing pole position and finishing second in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, now sits in third place in the championship with 87 points. A controversial five-second penalty for a first-lap incident with Piastri ultimately cost him the victory and potentially more valuable championship points.

The other Red Bull driver, Yuki Tsunoda, has been overtaken in the standings by Williams’ Carlos Sainz. Sainz, who finished eighth in Jeddah, now holds 5 points, placing him ahead of Tsunoda, who also has 5 points but is classified behind. This climb in the standings reflects a positive weekend for the Williams team, with Alex Albon also securing points.
