‘Copped some stick’: Madge delays Reynolds’ Broncos captaincy call

New Brisbane coach Michael Maguire has refused to guarantee Adam Reynolds the Broncos captaincy for the 2025 season and will wait until next year to make a call.

Reynolds copped his share of criticism last season for failing to support under seige coach Kevin Walters, as the Broncos’ season unravelled.

The Broncos went from three tries up in a grand final to missing the finals altogether in 2024 and Reynolds’ leadership was called into question.

Reynolds was involved in a wrestle with Patrick Carrigan in an embarrassing start to the season that saw both players reprimanded.

Ironically Carrigan is the man most likely to take over from Reynolds should he relinquish the captaincy.

Maguire has a history with Reynolds from his time coaching the Rabbitohs to a premiership in 2014, but left the club before he was made captain at Souths by Wayne Bennett.

Maguire conced Reynolds had been under pressure last season, and stopped short of endorsing him as the club’s skipper for 2025 just yet.

“As a captain he has had to go through a bit and he’s copped some stick, but he will be out there showing exactly who he is when he’s playing,” Maguire told Code Sports.

“We will discuss (the captaincy). Reyno is a leader. I’ve had a lot of great experiences with Reyno but we want some more.

“How that leadership and captaincy of the team looks, we will discuss that throughout January.

“There’s some things I will be doing with the team but he is a very good leader.”

Reynolds said he’s happy to continue in the role but if club bosses wanted to go in another direction “that’s their choice”.
