One thing was quite evident when watching the San Antonio Spurs play last season: Victor Wembanyama can play in the top 15 in the NBA as long as he has a reliable point guard at his side. Tre Jones was his running buddy in the previous season. The Spurs upgraded because Jones, although fully capable of finding Wembanyama with the ball at the proper time, is far from exceptional. They signed free agent Chris Paul, who is regarded as one of the all-time great point guards, and selected Stephon Castle in the summer draft. Even though he is past his prime at 39, the idea is that he will be a better player than Jones and act as a guide for Castle as he gets used to life in the NBA.
