Carlos Corberan has revealed he held lengthy talks with Daryl Dike after the striker’s newest injury issue.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the match with Cardiff City, as per The Express & Star [26 October], the Albion boss said that in the wake of Dike picking up a hamstring issue in training, he did his best to sympathise with the injury-prone star
Dike hasn’t featured for the Baggies’ first team since rupturing his Achilles tendon on 10 February, and Corberan emphasised giving the US international the time he needs to get back to fitness.
The Spaniard said: “Of course I was talking to him for a long time on Thursday – when you are a player you cannot feel what I feel as a coach, or what the doctors know.
“When you are a player you see this as something negative. You don’t see it as part of the process.
“That’s why giving a timing to these injuries is difficult and creates false expectations – at the end when a player is training, feeling fit and well, is when he is ready.”
West Brom fans will follow Carlos Corberan’s lead on Daryl Dike
It’s hardly surprising to see that Albion supporters are starting to lose patience with Dike’s continued absence from the first-team fold, having not appeared regularly for the side since early 2023.
Back-to-back Achilles injuries – one on each leg – have seen Dike sidelined for almost the entirety of the last 18 months, and that spell on the sidelines is set to continue with a new hamstring problem.
The American had been making his way back towards full fitness in recent weeks, but it remains to be seen if and when Dike does finally get back onto The Hawthorns pitch.
Josh Maja’s early-season form, including an opening-day hat-trick and seven goals in total, has tailed off in recent weeks, with the Baggies netting just once in their last four games and not winning in five
