The Kentucky Wildcats baseball team, boasting the seventh-best winning percentage in college baseball over the past two seasons (69.92%), has stumbled into unfamiliar territory. After a strong 13-2 start to the 2025 season, the team has dropped six of its last eight games, bringing their record to 15-8.
This recent slide marks the first time since April 9-22, 2023, that Kentucky has lost six out of eight games. Moreover, the Wildcats have not recorded eight losses before April since the 2022 season, when they missed the NCAA Tournament.
Kentucky’s struggles have been compounded by consecutive midweek losses to Murray State and Xavier, a feat they had not achieved since 2022. The team’s ERA has ballooned to 7.50, with 60 earned runs surrendered in 72 innings pitched. Furthermore, the Wildcats have committed nine errors over their last eight games, including several costly mistakes.
Notable blunders include Tyler Bell’s dropped infield fly, James McCoy’s base-running error, and Kyuss Gargett’s failed attempt to steal home. These mistakes have proven detrimental to the team’s success.
“We just need to execute better,” Kentucky coach Nick Mingione said following Tuesday’s 9-3 loss to Xavier. “When we do, we get the results we want. And when we don’t, that’s the results we get.”
The Wildcats will look to regroup and refocus on fundamentals to regain their winning form.
