Penn State to hire former Temple head coach Stan Drayton as running backs coach, per source

Penn State has found its next running backs coach.

The Nittany Lions are set to hire Stan Drayton to fill the position, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Drayton was most recently the head coach at Temple, but was fired in November during his third season leading the program. He amassed a 9-25 record in his time with the Owls.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel first reported the news.

Prior to his first stint as a head coach, Drayton was a successful running backs coach, holding that position — along with other additional titles — at Texas from 2017-2021. He was also the running backs coach with the Chicago Bears in 2015 and 2016 and the Ohio State Buckeyes from 2012-2014.

Drayton was the Buckeyes’ wide receivers coach for one year in 2011, and held several different running backs coach jobs prior to that, including brief stays at Florida, Tennessee, Syracuse and Mississippi State.

He’s coached several high-level backs before, including current Atlanta Falcons’ star Bijan Robinson and former Ohio State running backs Carlos Hyde and Ezekiel Elliott.

He’ll take over one of the best backfields in the country next season, with Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton returning to lead the room.

His addition will fill out the on-field coaching staff for the Nittany Lions, as he replaces former RBs coach Ja’Juan Seider, who took the same position with Notre Dame. The only other opening this offseason was filled by defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, who replaced Tom Allen after Allen took the DC job at Clemson.
