The Final Hours
According to reports from the Argentinian Public Prosecutor’s Office, Liam Payne exhibited erratic behavior and was described as “demanding” drugs and alcohol during his stay at the hotel. On the day of his death, he was reportedly seen in the hotel lobby in a state where he was “unable to stand” due to the consumption of various substances. Hotel staff and an acquaintance allegedly “dragged” him to his third-floor room. The prosecutor’s office put forth the hypothesis that Payne had attempted to leave his room via the balcony, leading to the fatal fall.
Cause of Death and Toxicology
A UK inquest later confirmed that Liam Payne’s cause of death was “polytrauma,” meaning multiple traumatic injuries. A preliminary autopsy report from Argentina indicated that he suffered “multiple trauma” and “internal and external hemorrhage” as a result of the fall. Toxicology tests revealed the presence of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in his system at the time of his death. Notably, the autopsy found no defensive injuries, suggesting Payne may have been in a state of semi- or total unconsciousness when he fell, unable to react to protect himself.
Investigations and Charges
Argentinian authorities charged five individuals in connection with Liam Payne’s death. These included the hotel manager, a receptionist, and Payne’s friend who was with him in Buenos Aires, all charged with negligent homicide. Two other hotel workers faced charges for allegedly supplying him with drugs. However, in March 2025, an Argentinian court dropped the charges against the hotel manager, the receptionist, and Payne’s friend. The charges against the two individuals accused of supplying drugs are still pending.
Liam Payne’s Struggles
Prior to his untimely death, Liam Payne had been open about his battles with mental health and addiction. He spoke of using alcohol to cope with the immense fame he experienced as part of One Direction and admitted to struggling with suicidal thoughts during that period. In July 2023, he announced reaching 100 days of sobriety after spending time in a rehabilitation facility. Payne also disclosed being diagnosed with ADHD as an adult and had a history of kidney issues since childhood.
The world continues to grapple with the loss of a young talent, and the details surrounding his death serve as a stark reminder of the challenges that can accompany fame and the importance of addressing mental health and addiction issues.
