Broncos legend Darius Boyd exits coaching ranks amid ‘concerns’ surrounding football department

Broncos legend Darius Boyd has quit his coaching post amid concerns of the direction the club’s football program was heading.

The Courier Mail reports Boyd advised former coach Kevin Walters of his desire to exit the team’s football department triggering a meeting with Walters a week before he sensationally parted ways with Brisbane.

With their season review underway at the time, Boyd informed Walters he was looking for new opportunities following the Broncos’ 12th-placed finish.

Boyd was the club’s back-five coach for the past three years working two days a week with Broncos stars such as Reece Walsh, Jesse Arthars, Selwyn Cobbo, Kotoni Staggs, Corey Oates and Deine Mariner.

The former Broncos skipper was part of the club’s 2006 premiership-winning team and also helped them to the famous 2015 grand final which was won by the Cowboys in golden point.

Once considered the best fullback in the game, Boyd won the Clive Churchill Medal in the Dragons’ 2010 premiership victory and was a valuable mentor for Walsh, regularly cutting up video for game analysis to help the flyer become the game’s best fullback.

Walsh greatly valued Boyd’s mentorship and spoke of the massive influence he had on him after the club qualified for last year’s grand final.

“I am very grateful to ‘Darbs’. I wouldn’t be here doing what I am doing without him,” Walsh said ahead of Brisbane’s grand-final loss to Penrith.

“Having him close each week and getting tips off him and picking his brain as much as I can … he has been massive.

“I wouldn’t say just this year either.

“Darbs came to sessions when I was at the EPD (elite player development squad) here in juniors and was teaching us three-on-twos and summing up situations.”

Boyd will remain employed by the Broncos as a mental-health ambassador, a role that is very dear to his heart.

It is unknown if new Brisbane coach Michael Maguire will sway Boyd to change his mind.
