Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s upcoming film, The Smashing Machine, has generated significant buzz with the release of first-look photos. Johnson’s transformation into former UFC fighter Mark Kerr is striking, with fans remarking on the incredible makeup work.
The photos show Johnson in a drastically different look, so much so that some fans initially mistook him for John Cena. One fan commented, “I thought it was John Cena,” while another agreed, “This was my first thought too, really looks like someone mashed Cena’s face onto The Rock’s body.”
The film’s makeup has sparked discussions about potential award nominations, with one fan suggesting, “If anything, I think a makeup nomination could be in play.” Another fan echoed this sentiment, saying, “I had trouble finding him for a second so I think they did a bang-up job on the makeup here.”
The Smashing Machine is directed by Benny Safdie, known for his critically acclaimed film Uncut Gems. The movie follows Mark Kerr’s journey as a UFC fighter during the “no-holds-barred era of the UFC at the peak of his career as he questions himself and struggles with life and his relationships.” Kerr, an NCAA champion wrestler, had a notable UFC career with a record of 15-11 before retiring in 2010.
The film also stars Emily Blunt as Kerr’s on-screen girlfriend, Dawn Staples, a role that mirrors their real-life relationship. Kerr and Staples were married from 2000 to 2015 and have a son together. The Smashing Machine is set for release on October 3, 2025, under A24.
