Fact check: Trump falsely says Europe doesn’t buy anything from US, wildly exaggerates trade deficit with China

Trump’s recent claims about trade with Europe and China have been thoroughly debunked by fact-checkers. The president falsely asserted that Europe doesn’t buy anything from the US, when in reality, the European Union purchased approximately $649 billion worth of US exports in 2024. This includes a significant number of US-made cars, with 164,857 units exported to the EU, valued at around $8.4 billion. Additionally, the EU bought $12.8 billion worth of US agricultural exports, making it the fourth-largest export market for US agricultural products.

Trump also wildly exaggerated the US trade deficit with China, claiming it exceeded $1 trillion. However, the actual trade deficit with China in 2024 was significantly lower, standing at $263 billion for goods and services or $295 billion for goods only.

Furthermore, Trump’s claim that China paid the tariffs imposed during his presidency is entirely inaccurate. In reality, US importers, not China, made the tariff payments to the US government. Studies have shown that Americans bore the majority of the costs, highlighting the misleading nature of Trump’s assertion.
