The opening day of the LPGA Match Play presented by MGM Rewards saw some thrilling matches, with several top players in action. However, defending champion Nelly Korda had a surprising outcome in her match against Brittany Altomare.

Korda, the world No. 1, was expected to cruise through her match against Altomare. However, the American golfer had other plans. Despite being 2 up with four holes to play, Korda settled for a halve after Altomare made a stunning comeback, winning the 15th and 16th holes.

“I didn’t play my best golf today, but I grinded it out and got a half point,” Korda said after the match. “It’s not the result I was hoping for, but it’s better than losing.”

On the other hand, Hyo Joo Kim had a dominant performance, defeating Bailey Tardy with an impressive 8-and-7 victory. Kim’s win was one of the most significant of the day, showcasing her exceptional skills and solidifying her position in the tournament.

“I played really well today, and my putter was hot,” Kim said after the match. “I’m feeling confident about my game, and I’m looking forward to the next round.”

The T-Mobile Match Play presented by MGM Rewards features a unique format, with 96 players competing in stroke play before the top 65 players advance to the next round. The tournament will eventually narrow down to the top eight players, who will compete in match play on the weekend.
