A US appeals court has ruled that a block on former President Donald Trump’s pause on federal aid will remain in place. The decision, made by the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals, upholds a lower court’s ruling that halted Trump’s plan to pause federal aid to Sanctuary Cities.

Background of the Case

In 2017, Trump issued an executive order directing the Department of Homeland Security to withhold federal grants from cities that refused to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. Several cities, including San Francisco and Seattle, sued the administration, arguing that the order was unconstitutional.

Court Ruling

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the lower court’s injunction blocking the pause on federal aid was proper. The court found that the administration’s plan to withhold funds was likely to cause irreparable harm to the cities and that the cities were likely to succeed on the merits of their claim.

Implications of the Ruling

The ruling means that the Trump administration’s plan to pause federal aid to Sanctuary Cities remains blocked. The decision is a significant setback for the administration’s efforts to crack down on cities that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.

Reaction to the Ruling

The cities that sued the administration welcomed the ruling. “This decision is a victory for the values of inclusivity and diversity that our city holds dear,” said San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera.

The Trump administration has not commented on the ruling, but it is likely to appeal the decision to the US Supreme Court.
