In a surprise move, Otis Hughley Jr., the head coach of Alabama A&M’s men’s basketball team, has resigned from his position, effective immediately. The announcement was made by Alabama A&M University’s Director of Athletics, Dr. Paul A. Bryant.
“We appreciate Coach Hughley’s contributions to our men’s basketball program over the past three seasons,” Dr. Bryant said in a statement. “We wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
Hughley’s tenure as head coach lasted three seasons, during which he accumulated a 37-63 record (.370 winning percentage). Despite showing promise in his first season, the team struggled to find consistency in the following years.
Under Hughley’s leadership, the Bulldogs had some notable victories, including a win over rival Alabama State. However, the team’s overall performance was marred by injuries, disciplinary issues, and inconsistent play.
The university will now begin a national search for Hughley’s replacement. The search committee will be looking for a candidate with a proven track record of success, strong recruiting skills, and the ability to lead the program to competitiveness in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).
“We are committed to finding a coach who can lead our men’s basketball program to greatness,” Dr. Bryant said. “We will conduct a thorough search to find the best candidate for the job.”
The resignation of Coach Hughley marks a new era for Alabama A&M men’s basketball. The university is eager to find a new leader who can restore the program to its former glory and bring excitement back to the campus community.
