While it might not be the deepest in the National Hockey League, the Vancouver Canucks have immense talent in their prospect pool including defenseman Tom Willander.
Willander is currently in his sophomore season in the NCAA with Boston University where he’s been given a bigger role with Lane Hutson, Cade Webber and Case McCarthy all making the jump to professional hockey.
The Stockholm native has nine points in 16 games this season for BU, and while he might have a tough time trying to beat his 25 points he had in his freshman year, he’s looking a lot more stronger on the defensive side of the puck.
The Canucks’ top defensive prospect was named to Sweden’s roster for the 2025 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship in Ottawa where, much like Boston University, he was placed into a bigger role.
Willander finished the tournament with five points in seven games, including a pair of powerplay goals against fellow Canucks prospect Basile Sansonnens and Switzerland during the preliminary round.
After a silver medal finish on home ice last year, Sweden was looking for their first gold since 2012 but unfortunately for Willander, Tre Kronor would go on to lose in a shootout in the bronze medal game to Czechia.
Tom Willander draw big comparison from TSN’s Craig Button
With the World Juniors now over, Willander heads back to Boston University for the final few months of the 2024-25 season, with the school looking for their 25th all-time appearance at the Frozen Four.
There’s still a little bit of time for Tom Willander and the Vancouver Canucks to decide what will happen once Boston University’s season ends, with the potential of him turning pro and joining the NHL club in April.
TSN’s Craig Button was a guest on Donnie & Dhali on Monday where he had some high praise for Tom Willander and his development to this point since being drafted by Vancouver in 2023.
Button also told Rick Dhaliwal that he would compare Tom Willander to Boston Bruins star blueliner Charlie McAvoy, saying that the Canucks prospect is going to be a solid two-way player for many years to come for Vancouver.
‘He is a big time competitor, he is going to be a solid 2 way player. I have compared him to Charlie McAvoy, he is going to be a significant player for the Canucks for a lot of years to come.’ Button said.
Vancouver Canucks fans are excited for Tom Willander to join the club and they might not have to wait long to see him in the National Hockey League, whether it in mid-April or early in the 2025-26 season.

Special Guest Was Spotted Yesterday in Canadiens Locker Room After Epic Win Over Canucks
We were treated to a beautiful moment live from the Montreal Canadiens’ locker room last night following their victory against the Vancouver Canucks. It’s often mentioned in the comments section, but fans love when the organization shares a short video showing what goes on behind the scenes in the locker room after a win. Here’s the video shared last night in this regard: A wonderful moment, and it’s so great to see the atmosphere currently reigning in the Canadiens’ locker room. It certainly has a significant impact on the results we’re seeing on the ice right now. Something special is happening within this team at the moment. David Reinbacher Spotted in the Canadiens’ Locker Room In the video above, keen observers indeed noticed the presence of a special guest. David Reinbacher, who is still currently injured, was in the Montreal Canadiens’ locker room last night, spending time with the team. That’s another piece of great news. It must certainly be enjoyable, instructive, and enriching for him to experience this. The management mentioned earlier this season that they have a plan to help young David Reinbacher progress this year in his own way, despite the fact that he obviously can’t hit the ice due to his lower-body injury. Reinbacher, 20 years old, is a 6 foot 3, 207-pound defenseman who was drafted 5th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in 2023. He recorded 5 points in 11 games last season with the Laval Rocket, with a positive differential of +6, and unfortunately hasn’t played this season.

Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh reacts to team signing RB Ezekiel Elliott
The Dallas Cowboys recently released running back Ezekiel Elliott, but Elliott has a new home for the time being. On Tuesday afternoon, the Los Angeles Chargers signed Elliott to their practice squad. Shortly after Elliott’s signing was official, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh was asked about Elliott at his Tuesday news conference. “Competitors welcome at the Los Angeles Chargers,” Harbaugh said. Harbaugh has familiarity with Elliott beyond seeing him on television the past decade as a member of the Cowboys. While Harbaugh was the head coach for the Michigan Wolverines in 2015 Elliott rushed for 214 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-13 Ohio State win over Michigan. “Very familiar. Personally, yeah. Got some bruises from days competing against Zeke,” Harbaugh said. “Great to see him. He’s here. He’ll start having at it today.” A video posted by ESPN’s Kris Rihm would later show Elliott suited up and practicing with the Chargers on Tuesday. It remains to be seen if Elliott will ever suit up for the Chargers or be part of the active roster. After all, it’s now the postseason and the 11-6 Chargers next game is on Saturday in the AFC wild-card round against the 10-7 Houston Texans at NRG Stadium in Houston. Whether Elliott gets acclimated to the Chargers scheme in that amount of time to actually receive snaps remains to be seen, but he being signed makes sense. Running back Gus Edwards is back at practice after missing the last two games, and the Chargers need depth if Edwards isn’t ready to roll by Saturday. Elliott, 29, has had an excellent NFL career, with 9,130 career rushing yards and 74 rushing scores, but his production has tailed off in recent years. In 15 games with the Cowboys this season, Elliott rushed for 226 yards on 74 carries with a career-low 3.1 yards per carry and three rushing scores. Perhaps being part of a playoff push with the Chargers will spark some life into Elliott and revive a player many perceive to be on his last legs. Now he has a chance to prove the naysayers wrong.

New York Mets Met With Former Baltimore Orioles Reliever, Top Available Free Agent
Former Baltimore Orioles reliever Tanner Scott has turned his career around since leaving the organization, putting himself in the upper tier of relievers in Major League Baseball. Scott was a member of the Orioles from 2017 to 2021, posting a 4.73 ERA, 4.00 FIP, and 1.54 WHIP in 156.0 innings. He struggled some during his stint with Baltimore but has always had decent strikeout stuff, striking out 208 hitters in 156.0 innings. The left-hander has been much better since, tossing to the likes of a 2.71 ERA, 2.86 FIP, 1.2 WHIP, and striking out 278 hitters in 212 2/3 innings from 2022 to 2024. On the free agency market, Scott is expected to get paid handsomely. He might not get what he’s exactly looking for, but he’s the best reliever available and should be compensated for it. His free agency has been somewhat quiet, given the expectations. It looks like it could be heating up, with Will Sammon of The Athletic reporting that that ex-Orioles reliever has met with the New York Mets. “The Mets met with Tanner Scott, league sources said, so there’s at least some appetite for at least exploring the top of the reliever market (though doesn’t mean they ultimately add from there).” The Mets’ big splash was landing Juan Soto, but they could use another arm in the bullpen like Scott. If he’s looking to get paid as much as some have suggested, with predictions coming in around $50 to $60 million, New York is likely one of the handful of teams that could realistically give him that. Scott seems to be controlling the reliever market. Once he signs, the rest of the market should start to heat up.
