While the first two games of the road trip for the Boston Bruins didn’t go according to plan, they got back into the win column with a 5-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday.
They hoped to carry that momentum into Tuesday night’s game against the Calgary Flames and did so in comeback fashion, winning 4-3 in overtime thanks to a game-winning goal by David Pastrnak.
It was also a homecoming, as former Flames players Elias Lindholm and Nikita Zadorov skated on the ice surface they once called home.
The Bruins appeared headed for a blowout loss, as the Flames jumped out to a 2-0 lead less than two minutes into the game with goals from Matt Coronato and Nazem Kadri.
While Lindholm, a former Flames forward, cut into the lead with his fourth goal, the Flames regained their two-goal advantage thanks to Ryan Lomberg’s first goal as a Flame.
Neither team scored in the second period, setting the stage for the Bruins to tie the game in the final frame with goals from Morgan Geekie and Marc McLaughlin.
With just 38 seconds left in overtime, it was Pastrnak who gave Boston Bruins fans everywhere a happy conclusion to the night.
3 most impressive Boston Bruins players from 4-3 OT win over Calgary Flames
#1. David Pastrnak
A sniper at his core, Pastrnak secured the extra point for the Bruins with a sharp shot past the blocker of goaltender Dustin Wolf in overtime.
It was his fourth shot of the game and the first to find the back of the net. With the goal, Pastrnak is now up to 11 goals this season.
#2. Elias Lindholm
The former Flames forward was traded by Calgary to the rival Vancouver Canucks last season but signed a free-agent contract with the Boston Bruins during the offseason.
It was a successful return to Calgary for Lindholm, who not only scored a goal but also added an assist while firing seven shots on Wolf.
#3. Charlie McAvoy
The Boston Bruins’ top defenseman was all over the ice, logging a team-high 23:24 of ice time while adding an assist and finishing with a plus-1 rating. He also recorded three shots.
McAvoy played a crucial role in the overtime winner, backchecking to prevent a scoring opportunity from Kadri and later feeding Pastrnak the puck for the game-deciding goal.
